How to Remove Limescale Naturally (Kettles, Taps & Showers)

Limescale is one of the most common cleaning frustrations, especially in hard water areas. It builds up on kettles, taps, shower screens and bathroom fixtures, leaving white marks, dull surfaces and stubborn deposits that can be difficult to remove.

The good news? You don't need harsh chemicals to tackle it.

A simple ingredient like citric acid can break down limescale effectively while being easy to use around the home.

What Is Limescale?

Limescale is made up of calcium and magnesium minerals left behind when water evaporates.

Over time it can build up on:

  • Kettles
  • Taps
  • Shower heads
  • Shower screens
  • Toilets
  • Around sinks and plugholes

If left untreated, it can make appliances less efficient and leave bathrooms looking tired and dull.

Why Use Citric Acid?

Citric acid is naturally found in citrus fruits and is a powerful descaler.

Many people choose it because it:

  • Effectively dissolves limescale
  • Is easy to use
  • Doesn't leave strong chemical fumes
  • Can be used throughout the home
  • Works quickly on most hard water deposits

How to Descale a Kettle Naturally

  1. Fill your kettle halfway with water.
  2. Add 1–2 tablespoons of citric acid.
  3. Boil the kettle.
  4. Leave for 20–30 minutes.
  5. Empty and rinse thoroughly.
  6. Boil fresh water once before using.

Your kettle should look noticeably cleaner with much of the limescale removed.

How to Remove Limescale from Taps

For light build-up:

  1. Dissolve 1 tablespoon of citric acid in a bowl of warm water.
  2. Soak a cloth in the solution.
  3. Wrap around the affected area for 15–30 minutes.
  4. Wipe clean and buff dry.

For stubborn deposits, gently scrub with an old toothbrush before rinsing.

How to Descale a Shower Head

  1. Remove the shower head if possible.
  2. Place it in a bowl of warm water.
  3. Add 2 tablespoons of citric acid.
  4. Leave for 1–2 hours.
  5. Rinse thoroughly and reattach.

This can help restore water flow and remove mineral build-up.

How to Clean Shower Screens

  1. Mix: 1 tablespoon citric acid in 500ml warm water
  2. Pour into a spray bottle and spray onto affected areas.
  3. Leave for a few minutes before wiping away and rinsing.
  4. Regular use can help prevent heavy limescale build-up.
