If you’ve ever stood in the cleaning aisle wondering what’s actually in all those sprays… you’re not alone.
We used to feel exactly the same — overwhelmed by choice, unsure what is actually needed, and not totally comfortable with some of the ingredients.
One of the easiest swaps I made was switching to a simple, low-tox bathroom cleaner — and this is still the one I use every week.
It’s effective, gentle, and doesn’t have that strong vinegar smell many people struggle with.
The essential oil in this recipe is optional, but a good quality pure essential oil adds both anti-bacterial and well-being benefits too. We love peppermint oil because it is so energising to use.
The Simple Bathroom Cleaner Recipe
You only need:
- 2 tablespoons of citric acid*
- 500ml warm water
- 10 drops essential oil (we love peppermint for the bathroom)
- Add everything to a spray bottle and shake gently until dissolved.
*we prefer citric acid over vinegar it's just as effective and doesn't smell)
Where to Use It
This works really well for:
- Sinks
- Taps
- Tiles
- Shower screens
It’s especially effective for breaking down limescale and leaving surfaces fresh and streak-free
Why It Works
- Citric acid naturally breaks down limescale and mineral build-up
- Water dilutes it to make it safe for regular use
- Essential oils add a fresh, clean scent
It’s simple, effective, and avoids the need for multiple different products.
A Couple of Things to Avoid
To keep things safe and effective:
- Avoid using on natural stone (like granite or marble)
- Keep out of reach of children
- Don’t mix with other cleaning products
