Gorgeous Weather? Let It Do Some of the Cleaning for You

When the weather is this gorgeous, the last thing most of us want to do is spend the day inside cleaning.

But warm, sunny weather is actually brilliant for tackling a few of those awkward cleaning jobs that are harder to do for most of the year.

Things dry faster. Windows can stay open. Bulky laundry can finally make it onto the line. And sometimes, the sunshine can do half the work for you.

So this isn't a list of jobs you should be doing while everyone else is outside enjoying themselves. It's more a case of:  if you've been meaning to tackle any of these, now might actually be the easiest time.

Wash the things that take forever to dry

Duvets, pillows, mattress protectors, throws and other bulky washable items can be a pain to deal with when you have to dry them indoors.

A hot, breezy day makes the whole thing much easier.

Always check the care label first, but if they're machine washable, get them washed early and give them as much time outside as possible to dry thoroughly.

It's also a good opportunity to wash those less-frequently-cleaned items like cushion covers and washable sofa throws.

Give white laundry some attention

White bedding, towels, socks and school shirts looking decidedly less white than they used to?

An oxygen bleach soak before washing can help lift stains and brighten whites without reaching for chlorine bleach.

Then get everything out on the line.

Sunlight has a natural bleaching effect on white fabrics, so a sunny day is particularly handy when you're trying to revive tired-looking whites.

Just be more cautious with strongly coloured fabrics, as prolonged bright sunlight can contribute to fading.

Freshen up your mattress

You obviously can't pop a mattress on the washing line, but a warm day is still a great opportunity to give it some attention.

Strip off all the bedding and mattress protector, vacuum the mattress thoroughly and leave the windows open to get plenty of air circulating.

If you use a fabric freshening powder, you can sprinkle a light layer over the mattress, leave it for a while and then vacuum it away thoroughly.

Then leave the mattress uncovered for a few hours before remaking the bed.

Tackle trainers and washable shoes

This is one of those jobs that's much less appealing in November when you know they'll still be damp two days later.

If the manufacturer's care instructions allow it, clean muddy or grubby trainers and leave them somewhere warm and well ventilated to dry.

Remove the insoles and loosen the laces to help air circulate.

Avoid leaving delicate shoes in intense direct heat for long periods, though — the aim is to help them dry, not bake them!

Give your bins a proper clean

Not glamorous. Very satisfying.

Summer can make bins smell considerably worse, but it also makes them much easier to wash and dry.

Empty the bin, remove any loose debris and give the inside and outside a thorough clean. Rinse if needed and leave it open outside until it's completely dry before putting a fresh liner in.

You can do the same with food-waste caddies and recycling boxes.

Tackle a couple of the awkward outdoor jobs

While you're already outside, summer is a good opportunity for some of the jobs that involve water and make far more sense when everything can dry naturally afterwards.

Think washable outdoor furniture, doormats, recycling boxes, muddy wellies or anything else that's been sitting on the mental *I'll deal with that eventually* list.

You don't need to do all of them.

Pick one. Future you will be delighted.

Let the weather do some of the work

I'm definitely not advocating sacrificing a gorgeous summer day to deep-clean your entire house.

Quite the opposite.

One of the things I believe about cleaning is that it should be as simple and practical as possible. We don't need cupboards overflowing with a different product for every tiny job, and we certainly don't need to spend all our spare time cleaning.

But if the sun is shining anyway, it's worth making use of it.

Wash the duvet. Rescue the white towels. Clean the horrible bin.

Then go and enjoy the sunshine.
