For years, we’ve been taught that clean laundry should smell of something.
Fresh linen. Spring flowers. Tropical breeze. Sometimes a fragrance so strong you can smell someone’s washing as they walk into the room.
But what if you don’t actually want your laundry to smell of anything?
For some people, fragrance is simply a preference. For others, heavily scented laundry products can feel overwhelming, particularly in homes where sensitive skin, allergies or sensory sensitivities are part of everyday life.
And increasingly, people are questioning whether fragrance needs to be part of their laundry routine at all.
What does fragrance free actually mean?
A genuinely fragrance-free laundry product has no fragrance added simply to make the product or your clothes smell a certain way.
That includes added perfume, but it’s also worth thinking about essential oils. Although essential oils are naturally derived, they’re still fragrant substances and aren’t necessarily the right choice for someone deliberately trying to avoid scent.
That’s why at Arborfill, when we say Fragrance Free, we mean no added fragrance and no essential oils.
It doesn’t mean your washing won’t be clean. It just means that when it comes out of the machine, it smells like… clean washing. Not a manufactured version of it.
Why might you choose fragrance-free laundry products?
There isn’t one type of fragrance-free household.
Some people choose fragrance-free products because they have sensitive skin. Others dislike strong scents, experience headaches around fragrance or simply want to reduce the number of unnecessary ingredients they’re using at home.
And then there’s something that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough: sensory sensitivity.
For some neurodivergent people, smells can be incredibly intense. A fragrance that one person barely notices can be distracting or overwhelming to someone else.
And laundry fragrance is particularly difficult to escape. It’s on your clothes, your towels and your bedding — things you’re in close contact with throughout the day and night.
Does fragrance free mean less effective?
No — and this is an important distinction.
Fragrance doesn’t do the cleaning.
Your detergent is there to lift dirt, oils and everyday grime from fabrics. Fragrance is primarily there to leave a scent behind.
Removing fragrance therefore doesn’t mean removing the ingredients responsible for actually cleaning your clothes.
For us, effective comes first. There’s little point creating a beautifully simple laundry product if it doesn’t deal with real family washing.
The aim is to use what has a useful job to do — and question what doesn’t.
What about fabric conditioner?
Fabric conditioner is another area where fragrance has become closely associated with “clean”.
Traditional fabric conditioners are designed to coat fabric fibres, helping them feel softer and often leaving fragrance behind. But not everyone wants or needs that — particularly on things like towels and bedding.
A fragrance-free laundry rinse offers a different approach.
Rather than adding fragrance, ours is designed to help reduce detergent build-up, remove hard water deposits, and leave fabrics feeling naturally fresh and soft.
It’s particularly useful if you’re trying to simplify your laundry routine without giving up that finished feeling altogether.
And what about stains?
Going fragrance free doesn’t mean you have to accept grey whites and stained school clothes.
This is where oxygen bleach earns its place in a simple laundry cupboard.
Unlike chlorine bleach, oxygen bleach — sodium percarbonate — releases oxygen when dissolved in water. It can be used to help tackle stains, brighten whites and give heavily soiled laundry an extra boost.
Rather than making your everyday detergent unnecessarily complicated, you can add it when you actually need it.
That idea runs through a lot of what we’re trying to do at Arborfill: simple everyday products, with something more targeted when there’s a job that needs it.
A simple fragrance-free laundry routine
You really don’t need a cupboard full of laundry products.
